The Magicians’ Guild by Trudi Canavan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I went into this book not really knowing what to expect (and I had bought the whole trilogy so I was praying it would be good), and it was really good.
The story is following Sonea, a young girl living in the poorer part of the city Imardin, as she out of nowhere discovers she has magic. No one that isn’t of the Noble Houses or lives withing the city walls has magic. A boy is killed and Sonea is forced to stay hidden from the magicians of the city. That however, is a task easier said than done as her magic is uncontrolled and untrained, bursting out when she least expects it.
Sone is a character I relate to very much. Her choices and behaviour feels very similar to mine and I think I would have made many of the same choices. She’s determined and thinks about her choices.
The magic is also very interesting, even though we don’t learn much about it in this book. But the fact that you might die unless you know how to use it is feels like a natural thing. Who would like to read about magic without consequences?
The ground has been set for this story. It is amazing how the book feels totally complete, at the same time as it feels like it is only setting up the story. There is so much to come. And I really hope the second book doesn’t feel like a filler-book.
There is one last thing I want to say: this is a perfect bridge book for someone who reads YA and want to start reading Adult Fantasy.
“We should expect this young woman to be more powerful than our average novice, possibly even more powerful than the average magician.”
This year, like every other, the magicians of Imardin gather to purge the city of undesirables. Cloaked in the protection of their sorcery, they move with no fear of the vagrants and miscreants who despise them and their work-—until one enraged girl, barely more than a child, hurls a stone at the hated invaders…and effortlessly penetrates their magical shield.
What the Magicians’ Guild has long dreaded has finally come to pass. There is someone outside their ranks who possesses a raw power beyond imagining, an untrained mage who must be found and schooled before she destroys herself and her city with a force she cannot yet control.
