A serious episode this time around…
Such an innocent start to an episode. Merlin being bored and just uses some magic. The smile on his face, and the sadness. But then it is destroyed when a woman has seen the magic he performed! Luckily she didn’t see/realise it was him!
This results in Uther calling in an old friend, the Witchfinder, who you hate from the start. He believes so much about himself and seems to want to do anything to burn people at the take. Even bring in in villagers who never before have told the king anything about witchcraft in Camelot.
Have to say the actor does a great job! If an actor manages to make you hate a character that much, I am impressed.
Gaius is forced to “confess” that he was the magician the woman saw in the forest and the women saw in Camelot. All to protect Merlin and Morgana from the Witchfinder. Uther is devastated, but his hate for witchcraft has him blinded.
What Gaius has to go through in this episode is awful! Torture is not an interrogation method to use, people say anything to escape pain. For Gaius the emotional pain of the Witchfinder killing Merlin and Morgana is what breaks him.
This is a great episode. Such awful things happen and you get to see how evil people there really are in the world, not just the fictional. You don’t need magic to do evil.
