Black Friday 2016 Book Haul

Black Friday. I hadn’t meant to buy anything, but then I realised they had a -20% discount + a chance to get all of your money back on an order so I couldn’t help myself. I know Christmas is just around the corner, but I do think I wont get any of these as a gift then. I haven’t talked about them that much.

But let’s move on and look at the books I bought.

Firstly I picked up Trudi Canavan’s The Black Magician trilogy. This was a Goodreads recommendation quite some time ago, and when I read the synopsis I knew I wanted to read this story. I really hope this lives up to my expectations.

Synopsis to The Black Magician book 1 – The Magicians’ Guild:

“We should expect this young woman to be more powerful than our average novice, possibly even more powerful than the average magician.”

This year, like every other, the magicians of Imardin gather to purge the city of undesirables. Cloaked in the protection of their sorcery, they move with no fear of the vagrants and miscreants who despise them and their work-—until one enraged girl, barely more than a child, hurls a stone at the hated invaders…and effortlessly penetrates their magical shield.

What the Magicians’ Guild has long dreaded has finally come to pass. There is someone outside their ranks who possesses a raw power beyond imagining, an untrained mage who must be found and schooled before she destroys herself and her city with a force she cannot yet control.”

Thethe inquisition summoner second book I bought was The Inquisition by Taran Matharu, which is the second book in the Summoner series. I do still have to read the first book, but it has received such praise and I want to read it so badly. It is a story about a young man who can summon demons.

Synopsis to Summoner book 1 – The Novice:

“When blacksmith apprentice Fletcher discovers that he has the ability to summon demons from another world, he travels to Adept Military Academy. There the gifted are trained in the art of summoning. Fletcher is put through grueling training as a battlemage to fight in the Hominum Empire’s war against orcs. He must tread carefully while training alongside children of powerful nobles. The power hungry, those seeking alliances, and the fear of betrayal surround him. Fletcher finds himself caught in the middle of powerful forces, with only his demon Ignatius for help.

As the pieces on the board maneuver for supremacy, Fletcher must decide where his loyalties lie. The fate of an empire is in his hands. The Novice is the first in a trilogy about Fletcher, his demon Ignatius, and the war against the Orcs”

OdinsbarnThe last book I bought was Odinsbarn by Siri Pettersen. It is the first book in the Ravneringene series. Sadly, there is no English edition of this book, but if you happen to understand Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Czech or Polish, you are lucky. It is a story based in the Norwegian folklore, and if you know anything about the Norwegian folklore that alone should sell this book to you.

Translated synopsis of Ravneringene book 1 – Odinsbarn:

“Hirka is fifteen winters old when she’s told she’s an Odinsbarn (eng: Odin’s child) – a tailless beast from another world spreading decay. Her whole life is turned upside down. She’s become despised, fared and hunted, and somebody wants to kill her to keep her identity a secret. But there are worse things than Odinsbarn, and Hirka isn’t the only creature who’s travelled to this world…”

Have you read any of these books? What are your thoughts? And what did you buy on Black Friday?

  1. This is an awesome collection! I love the synopses for all these books. I am fascinated by Norwegian folklore as it is so similar to the Greek/Roman pantheon, yet completely different. It’s a shame that Odinsbane isn’t in English. But I’m glad you get a chance to read it!

      1. Criminal novels seems to be the most famous genre when talking about Nordic authors, so even though I haven’t read any of them (ashamed) I do recommend them. And they are translated into English. Jo Nesbø, Lars Kepler and Stieg Larsson are some of the most famous ones I think 🙂

    1. I was thinking “reading more Nordic authors” 🙂 It is sad how few authors I read from the Nordic countries. Hoping to find some good fantasy, hopefully with a base in Nordic folklore. I’d also love to read the fairytales by Andersen or Asbjörnsen and Moe.

      1. Me too. Yeah Nordic folklore or Norse mythology would be cool to read more about. I read a lot of Asbjørnsen and Moe when I was younger.

Are you from Scandinavia or something?

      2. I’m from Finland, but I’m a Swedish speaking Finn, so a little more Scandinavian than “normal” Finns 😉

I haven’t read any Asbjørnsen and Moe, but I got really interested last spring when I too a course in Nordic folklore and wrote an essay on trolls
