Fight Like a YA Girl Book Tag

Be prepared for a lot of tips on strong female leads…

So I was not tagged by The Book Prophet to match YA girls to some descriptions, but I saw her do it and really want to do it. I just really hope I’ve read enough YA to have enough characters… Tend to read everything from children’s fantasy to adult fantasy so it might be a challenge. Let’s see how it goes!

It is so important for everyone to see examples of strong women in books, television, and movies. There are so many ways in which women exhibit strength, so this tag is meant to be a celebration of some those strengths.

Warrior Girls

Raisa ana’Marianna from The Seven Realms series and Celaena Sardothien from the Throne of Glass series are definitely two fighters you cannot not mention.

Girls Who Fight With Their Mind

Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series and Denna (Dianne, Dinnah… Whatever she wants to call herself) from The Name of the Wind. Luna doesn’t care about what others think and uses her peculiar mind to get through basically everything. Denna is using her wits to get what she needs from the world, but it isn’t easy.

Girls Who Fight With Their Heart

Lucy Pevensie from The Chronicles of Narnia, if you have read her character you know she’s got a heart of gold. I also chose Tina from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay, she is one of my favourite characters and definitely has her heart in the right place.

Girls Who Are Trained Fighters

Elinor from A Reaper of Stone, I have only read a short story about her and I’d love to read more stories about her! Fenris Fenrir from the Ragnarök manhwa is definitley a trained fighter! Sadly the series was cancelled just after we got to hear about the magnitude of her powers (and if you have read Ragnarök you know her skills were incredible to begin with).

Strong Girls of Colour

Nehemia Ytger from Throne of Glass and Nasuada from the Inheritance Cycle (Eragon in case you didn’t recognise the name of the series). Both names start with an N and both are very important characters. Sadly none of them are in the leading role.

Girls Who Fight To Survive

Vic (Victoria) from A Wizard’s Forge really does have to survive! I don’t understand how she does it, with everything she’s put through. For the second choice I have to go for a obvious one, Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. Try to live through that.

Girls Who Are Weapons Masters

Vlora Flint from The Powder Mage Trilogy. You see her talent even more in the sequel to the trilogy, Sins of Empire. Arya from The Inheritance Cycle (just to remind you, that’s the name of the “Eragon series”). I remember wanting to be her as I read those books.

Girls Who Don’t Conform To Gender Roles

Oh it’s been so long since I read about Alanna from the Song of the Lioness, but I can never forget her. I loved her when I read her story and I should read it again. Vin from the Mistborn trilogy is another amazing female that sadly doesn’t really fall under the YA spectra, but whatever 😀

Girls With Kick Butt Magical Powers

Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series is the brightest witch of her age, and Harry would never have defeated You-Know-Who without her. Feyre from A Court of Thorns and Roses series we find out has some exceptional magical powers in the later books.

Strong Girls in Contemporary Novels

Hm… I don’t read contemporary…

Seriously Fierce Girls

Enid from Ewan Pendle and the White Wraith. Just read the book and she won the “my-favourite-character” competition with miles! The other one is not a YA female, but she deserves a mention anyway – the nameless lead of The Book of the Unnamed Midwife. Read the book. It is a gift from writer’s heaven.

Most Anticipated Book With a Strong Leading Lady

Oh… not really waiting for anything at the moment. Probably the next instalment in Brian McClellan’s Gods of Blood and Powder series – Wrath of Empire (cover to be revealed). Vlora being one of the main characters and she definitely plays a huge role and hopefully will continue being as awesome as she’s been this far.
